A top ‘Cherry’ executive has been found dead after the show launched an investigation into missing cash and unpaid rent
The Chery Show is mourning the loss of one of its top executives amid a financial investigation into the show.
Matt Ozell, the executive behind Sherri Shepherd’s daytime talk show, was found dead at his home in Pyrmont, New York, on February 13, a police source confirmed to Page Six.
Police would not comment further because it is an “open investigation,” but Uzzle is believed to have died of an apparent suicide, according to sources.
Page Six has learned that Uzzle — whose primary job was managing production and overseeing the budget on “Sherri” — was under investigation for the show at the time of his death.
Sources tell us that several departments have been complaining of petty cash issues, and it was recently brought to the attention of parent company Debmar-Mercury that rent at the show’s Chelsea studio in New York City has not been paid since September.
“There was real concern among staff that the show would be shut down. Debmar had to step in,” said a source familiar with the situation.
Another source told us that the show was not affected, and that Debmar-Mercury continued production of “Sherri.”
Uzzle — who Shepherd inherited from “The Wendy Williams Show” after “Sherri” replaced Williams’ daytime show — said he “needed a couple of days to get his papers together” after Bra*s confronted him about the show’s financial situation, according to a source. Familiar with the situation.
Sources tell us police conducted a welfare check after no one heard from him and “found him dead.”
A Debmar-Mercury rep did not reveal details about his death or employee issues, but told us: “We have kept [law firm] Morgan Lewis to a*sist us in investigating the matter, and pending the outcome of this investigation, we will have no further comment.
News of Uzzle’s death has been largely kept secret, except for small news sites like County Local News and the National Memorial Site, which described Uzzle as a “respected production manager known for his outstanding contributions to The Wendy Williams Show.” And many other important projects.”
Uzzle’s work in “Sherri” was not mentioned.
Sherri included a memory of Uzzle in the February 15 episode, and management has hired grief counselors to help employees deal with the loss.
