The Panthers have announced Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback for the 2022 season, and his wife is emotional.
On Monday, Emily Mayfield revealed she “felt every emotion” in a note posted to her Instagram story.
“Moving is stressful,” Emily wrote, apparently referring to the couple’s move from Cleveland to Charlotte after the Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers in July. “It’s a lot of tedious, quick decisions and nostalgic memories. Life is weird and it goes by so quickly. It can also change in the blink of an eye.
“It’s all about God’s timing, and it’s super exciting, but also super scary and sometimes sad,” Emily continued. “Safe to say I feel every emotion today.”
The beauty influencer also reposted congratulatory messages on Mayfield’s quarterback news to her Instagram story.
Mayfield won the starting job over former Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, who struggled in Carolina last year, throwing nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 games.
“When we started this process, we were looking at three things,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Monday. “No. 1, mastery of attack, No. 2, situational football excellence, and No. 3, movement of the ball and involvement of the guys. That has always been our priority.
“Baker has made a lot of improvements, a lot of growth in all three areas in a short time.”
Mayfield will take the field as Carolina’s starting quarterback in the team’s third preseason game against Buffalo on Friday, Rhule said.
The Browns traded Mayfield to Carolina in early July in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024. It came four months after the quarterback originally requested a trade to Cleveland in March.
At the time, the Browns made a surprise play for his replacement in then-Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who recently received an 11-game suspension and a $5 million fine last week at following two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct by massage therapists.
Mayfield will face his former team when the Panthers host the Browns in Week 1.
