summary

  • Cameron Brink was selected second overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks.
  • Before the draft, he called out Seth and Steph Curry only to be turned down by the Hornets guard.

Cameron Brink emerged as one of the best defensive players in NCAA women’s Division I basketball history during her recent tenure at Stanford. He showed great potential not only in defense but also in goal while playing under Tara VanDerveer. Athletes like her have only one goal in mind, and that is to compete in the WNBA. Brink earned his shot at professional stardom after being selected as the 2nd overall pick by the LA Sparks in 2024.

There are many reasons why the Sparks have been so successful during Brink’s tenure, first and foremost because they are already top five in the league in defense. Brink averaged 14 points per game during his college days while grabbing 9.1 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game. Interestingly, her relationship with Steph Curry also came to light after entering the college scene in 2020.

Cameron Brink was disappointed by Seth Curry on draft night

Cameron Brink is not related to the Curry family by blood but their connection dates back several years to their existence. On draft night, the Sparks rookie was accompanied by his parents, brother and godmother Sonia Curry. He revealed that he confronted Steph and Seth before the draft, but both calls had seemingly different results. When Steph answered the call and spoke to her, Seth apparently immediately declined.

he said “Just before I came here, I met Steph with Sonia, my godmother and my mother. He laughed and said all these encouraging words to me. And we FaceTime Seth and he immediately hangs up.” However, there is no love lost between Cameron and his godbrother Seth. Over the years, Curry has been a positive influence on Cameron and Steph has mentored him on several occasions.

Cameron Brink and Steph Curry’s connection goes back to their parents’ college days

Steph Curry is a legend in his own right who never formed a relationship with Cameron Brink while excelling in the NBA. However, the pieces of their family connected years before the two of them came into the limelight. Sonia Curry and Michelle Bain-Brink both attended Virginia Tech during their college days. Sonya competed in volleyball while Michelle excelled on the basketball court like her WNBA daughter.

Sonya and Michelle became extremely close and the bond grew stronger after years of separation in their lives. Michelle eventually asked Sonya to be Cameron’s godmother, and Steph was probably 13 years old. Brink’s mother worked as a product manager for Nike and was instrumental in creating Don Stanley’s signature shoe line. The Kari matriarch went on to pursue her dream of serving her community by founding a Montessori school in North Carolina. Cameron frequented Steph’s basketball camps before attending college.
