Danielle Fishel Best wishes Topanga and Corey are not married on ‘Boy Meets World’
Will Mr. Feeney agree?
Danielle Fishel, known for her role as Topanga on “Boy Meets World,” expressed some dissatisfaction with her character’s happiness.
On the Aug. 5 episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast co-hosted by former castmates Ryder Strong and Will Friedl, Fishel, 43, revealed that if he could change one thing about the show, it would be to change the marriage between Topanga. and her high school sweetheart, Corey Matthews (Ben Savage).
During a question-and-answer session, Fishel admitted that he felt that marriage was “not the right choice” for the show. Her character proposes to Corey fresh out of Topanga High School, and Fishel feels the choice limits the scope of their story.
“I think I can still let him propose,” the actress explained, “and he still says yes, and we go through the whole plan, and then we decide it’s not the right choice for us right now. And we’re still together. . We don’t have to break up, but maybe we save the wedding aspect for the end of the show and not spend the whole year of the wedding on the show.”
The couple spent the show’s sixth season engaged before marrying in the seventh and final season. Topanga briefly called off the marriage early last season, but the two quickly reconciled and married in the November 1999 episode “It’s About Time”.
“I only know about it from my memory, after we got married it was like, well, now we’re married, and they had to come up with new, like, twists for us,” Fishel said. “And I don’t think I love these scars.”
She added that she felt the show “could get more mileage out of them being together, but not married yet.”
Earlier this year in the 90s, Fishel told PEOPLE that Corey and Topanga were too young to get married.
“There are stories of it working,” Fishel said at the time, “but I would say, overall, getting married out of high school is generally not ideal.”
Despite her reservations, Cory and Topanga’s story had a happy ending.
Both Fishel and Savage reprized their roles in Disney Channel’s 2014 reboot, “Girl Meets World,” where they are happily married after 15 years and raise their two daughters, Riley (Rowan Blanchard), in New York City.
The spinoff also stars Sabrina Carpenter as Maya, Riley’s best friend. It ran from 2014 to 2017.
The original “Boy Meets World” wrapped on ABC in 2000 after seven seasons.
Fishel, Strong, 44, and Friedl, 47, began co-hosting the ReWatch podcast “Pod Meets World” in 2022.
The trio reunited in March with former castmates Anthony Tyler Quinn (Jonathan), Betsy Randall (Amy), Lee Norris (Stuart), Trina McGee (Angela), William Daniels (Mr. Feeney) and Bonnie Bartlett Daniels (Lila). The bride attended. They took a trip down memory lane. H
At the Tampa Bay event, the podcast hosts also announced a documentary about the reunion and reunion experience for their fans.
“We’re not even sure if it will ever go anywhere. We don’t necessarily intend to do anything with it. But like, forest [Bonnie Bartlett Daniels] That being said, it’s been such an amazing group that we’ve been able to keep in touch for all this time,” Fishel said at the time. “It really kicked into high gear last year when we started the podcast and we started doing some live shows. “
“Even if we don’t broadcast it anywhere, it’s just for us,” he added. “But yeah, we’re really excited about it.”
But there was one notable absence at the mini-cast reunion.
Last year, Fishel, Friedl and Strong claimed that Savage had “just disappeared” from their lives.
“We did not fight. There is no fall. There was no hostility. She just woke up one day and decided ‘I don’t want this person in my life anymore,'” Friedel told Variety.
The distance from his former cast mates coincided with Savage’s announcement that his career was shifting from an actor to a politician.
He made an unsuccessful bid for a seat on the West Hollywood City Council in 2022 and announced in March 2023 that he was running to represent the Los Angeles-area district in Congress.
Friedl, who played Savage’s older brother on the show, spoke about his relationship with Savage in an interview with the Post in February. He claims there is no update on their contact.
“Ben, you know, is running for Congress, and I hope he feels the same way I feel about him, which is that I hope he’s happy and healthy and enjoying his life,” she said.
