Derek Carr walks away from Raiders after shock bench

The Las Vegas Raiders benched longtime starting quarterback Derek Carr in a shock move on Wednesday, and the fallout was quick.

After the news broke, Carr was not seen at Raiders practice. NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport then reported that the 31-year-old quarterback has walked away from the team indefinitely as Jarrett Stidham takes over as starting quarterback.

“As part of the discussions that have taken place over the past few days, both parties have concluded that it is best for Raiders QB Derek Carr to walk away from the final two games to avoid obvious distractions, sources say,” said tweeted Rapoport. “He will not train and will be listed as ‘not injury related’.”

First-year head coach Josh McDaniels’ move to Stidham was a surprise. Las Vegas is technically still alive for the final AFC playoff spot (although their chances are slim to none). Carr is a nine-year veteran and has started 142 games for the Raiders since entering the league, earning three Pro Bowl nods and taking the team to the playoffs twice. Former Cal Chase Garbers quarterback will support Stidham.

He has no guaranteed money left on his contract and the team can walk out of their deal with a limited dead cap in 2023, leading many to believe Carr has been playing his last shots with the team. If he were to get seriously injured in the final two games, part of his remaining salary would become guaranteed.

“Obviously I don’t think anyone was excited about it here,” said Davante Adams, Carr’s former teammate at Fresno State for whom the team traded first and second-round picks in the offseason. . “He’s one of my really good friends and the reason I came here in the first place.

“I’m not going to sit here and go on and on, but obviously I’m supporting my guy. We have to end this season in the best possible way all things considered at this stage.

Adams took to Instagram with a photo of the two wearing Fresno State gear together, captioned, “This man gave it his all. The reason I’m a Raider… One of the most disciplined and loving people I know. I got my brothers back through anything and if you can’t respect it (excuse my language) 🖕🏾 you!!!”
