Donovan Garcia, a rising amateur boxer, died in a car accident at the age of 15.

A GoFundMe posted by Garcia’s cousin Rosmina says the young boxer suffered severe brain damage in a car accident on January 11.

“Unfortunately Donovan fought his biggest battle and went 7 rounds, but he was tired,” the GoFundMe says. “His family wants everyone to know that he is at peace and that they are at peace with God’s will. We will let everyone know about the services as soon as possible. Thank you all for the continued prayers, support and love. Donovan’s memory and legacy will live forever.

Garcia’s family wrote in an obituary: “Donovan was loved by the boxing community and many others. Boxing was his passion and he won many championships including the 2019 Golden Gloves. Donovan has a heart of gold and puts everyone before himself.

According to his Instagram page, Garcia has been a state silver glove champion and Colorado Junior Olympics state champion multiple times, in addition to the gold glove championship listed in his obituary.

USA Boxing board member Pat Butler commented on Garcia’s obituary.

“My deepest condolences to all of Donovan’s family and friends,” he wrote. “I had the privilege of refereeing several of his boxing competitions. He always behaved with a lot of charisma, class and skills.

“Donovan was a handsome young man with a heart of gold. I had the pleasure of training him when he was 7 and signing him up with USA BOXING to start his amateur career. He became a great champion beating some of the best boxers,” wrote boxing trainer Manuel Alvarado. “Boxing was his passion. He leaves a place in many hearts. Now he is a champion in heaven who looks down on us all. will be missed until we are all united in heaven, the young man with the heart of gold!
