Contains spoilers and speculation for ‘House of the Dragon’
Los Angeles, California: ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 5 aired on HBO on July 14, 2024. The episode followed an epic high-octane battle at Rook’s Rest that left King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney and In) Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) dead.
With Aegon unfit to rule for the foreseeable future, the Council of Greens had a task on their hands to determine who would rule in his absence. Alyssaint Hightower (Olivia Cooke) claims to rule in the absence of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) while she struggles with illness.
The Green Council, however, decides to go with Amond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) much to Alicent’s dismay who thinks Amond is young. Even his most trusted advisors betray him and choose Aemond.
Why did Larry Strong and Kristen Cole choose Almond over Alicent?
Lord Larrys Strong was born with a bent leg that earned him the nickname Clubfoot (@hbo).
Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) is one of Alicent Hightower’s closest allies and has been with her throughout her journey as Queen. But when it came to choosing a regent ruler, he decided to choose Emond. Kristen Cole (Fabian Frankel), who is romantically involved with Alicent and also her sworn sword, decides to choose Amond over her.
The reason for their choice is the patriarchal nature of this world where accepting a female ruler is not something the Lords are used to. Kristen Cole makes her argument and talks about keeping Alicent away from the destruction that follows. The argument seems to be an excuse rather than a concern for Alicent.
With Alicent’s decision, peace was an opportunity as Rhaenyra and Alicent could devise a way to avoid a war that would likely kill thousands on the battlefield and have lasting effects for the Little People as well.
Amond’s actions cost the Greens in ‘fire and blood’

Amond may be a better tactician and fighter than his brother, but he certainly lacks the experience needed to win battles on the battlefield. He fails as a strategist according to ‘Fire and Blood’ when Amond and Kristen Cole head to Harrenhal to take the Riverlands from Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).
Once Amond leaves Harrenhal, he leaves King’s Landing open and Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) easily seizes the throne with her dragons and army.
If Alicent had been Queen Regent, she would not have unveiled the throne. He always advocated keeping the vagrants in the city to keep the blacks out.
In the book, Amond and Daemon eventually kill each other at Harrenhal in the battle over the God’s Eye and kill their dragons Vagar and Carax.
