‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 sets up a big Season 3 moment

Contains spoilers and speculation for ‘House of the Dragon’

Los Angeles, California: ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Episode 6 aired on HBO on July 21, 2024. The epic action-adventure show has had a slow burn so far in its second season while sneakily wowing viewers with some of the most impressive fights in the upcoming season. One such setup came in episode 6.

A moment in Episode 6 sees Emond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) discuss the possibility of the Triarchy, who we saw defeated at the Stepstones in Season 1, returning to exact their revenge on Corlys Velarion (Steve Toussaint).

Corlys has built a blockade on the Velarion Gullet that has affected supplies to King’s Landing and is becoming a major obstacle for the Greens to run King’s Landing and an immediate concern for Amond. According to ‘Fire and Blood’, there will be an epic battle in Gullet.

Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) has been missing in action since Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Kearney) removed him from the King. In the book, Otto allies with Trishasan and breaks Gullet’s siege by kicking off Gullet’s war.

The battle will see Triarchy go up against Corlys Valaryon who will aid the Dragon Riders. Jacerys Velarion (Harry Collett) will fly in with his dragon Vermax and destroy the ships but the Triarchy have experience fighting dragons from the battle in season 1 and were prepared for it.

They kill Vermax with their arrows as he sinks into the sea, and Jaceris is also killed by a crossbow. Jaceris’ death is a huge blow to the Blacks but they have help in the form of Dragonseed.

The Dragonseeds are dragon riders Hugh the Hammer (Kieran Beau), Wolf (Tom Bennett), Adam of Hull (Clinton Liberty), and a character named Nettles who is presumably replaced in the show by Rhena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell).

Gullet’s battle is won by blacks but the victory comes at a huge cost to both sides. The Triarchy burned one-third of the Velarion fleet and their ship Spicetown. Triarchy is deadly in Driftmark and kills many people in the city of Velarion.

The Greens, however, are unable to choke Corlys Valaryon at sea and King’s Landing as the siege stands. Triarchy abandons the Greens and loses more than half of their fleet. They decided not to fight the Greens anymore.

The victory comes at a price but it is an important victory for the Blacks as it removes the biggest threat posed by the Greens. Corliss Velarion, however, considers this victory to be one he never expected.

The Battle of Gullet is expected to take place in Season 3.
