Kansas Zoo baby chimp who captured hearts on social media found dead in mother’s arms

A Kansas chimp who showed the world what a mother’s love looks like is now mourning with millions after the unexpected death of her 5-week-old son.

An animal care team from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita said the baby chimpanzee was found dead and cradled in its mother’s arms when they arrived at the zoo on Thursday morning.

The announcement of his birth came hours after the zoo released heartbreaking video of the newborn being welcomed into the arms of his beloved mother after a two-day medical observation.

The baby’s mother, Mahale, isn’t quite ready to part ways with her son, but when she is, the zoo team plan to carry out a full medical evaluation to determine the baby’s cause of death. chimpanzee.

“Mahale’s love for Kucheza was and will continue to be felt by billions of people around the world,” the zoo said in a statement to PKB Weather. “In his few weeks of life, Kucheza has brought joy and light to so many people and provided an opportunity to educate the world about chimpanzees, the dangers they face in the wild and, above all, why we should care.”

It was the third offspring of the 28-year-old mother and it was a significant birth for the population of the species. Chimpanzees are listed as endangered and wild populations are declining due to habitat loss and poaching for bushmeat.
