Kingston Baseball Association Launches Girls Program – Kingston
When you play minor sports, there’s nothing like a jersey handover day. And for a group of Kingston girls, this document is more important than most.
“So when you look at this 20 years from now, and your girls are playing, you can say, ‘I was on the very first team,’” coach April Fitzpatrick told her team.
The sun is setting on the 2023 baseball season, but the Kingston Baseball Association is already looking ahead to next summer, when it plans to field its first-ever women’s teams in competitive tournaments.
Fitzpatrick was speaking to the players who make up the first women’s baseball club, the Kingston Colts.
“They are very good at listening, very good at taking direction. They want to learn and they are very excited to come. We try to make it positive and fun for them,” Fitzpatrick said.
The Kingston Baseball Association formed teams in three different age groups after seeing the demand was there.
“We had floated the idea of launching a program just for girls. We emailed the families and were extremely surprised by the response,” said Tori Boshart, president of the Kingston Baseball Association.
“In a few days, we had more than 50 candidates. »
The teams started with a fall ball session on Wednesday evening, but with such a high turnout, splitting them into teams was a no-brainer.
“It’s a short season, but it’s the first time ever,” Kirkpatrick said. “So the number of girls that came out and participated in this fall ball on Wednesday night is incredible.”
The first official game was between the Colts junior women’s club and the Ottawa West Twins, with Kingston winning both games in a doubleheader.
Next year’s plan will be to start in the spring with teams playing tournaments and exhibition games on weekends throughout the summer.
