Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time goal earns Argentina and Lionel Messi a record 16ᵗʰ Copa America title

A summer of international joy continued for Argentina as the national team won its 16ᵗʰ Copa America title with a 1-0 win over Colombia. From delay to chaos to emotion, the final had it all and ultimately it was superior individual quality that led to Colombia’s failure. Substitute Lautaro Martinez sealed continental glory in the second half of extra time.

Colombia’s players will have themselves to blame for not being able to achieve their goals. Nation had plenty of opportunities in front of goal but could not take any of them. A deficit like that against a team of Argentina’s quality was always going to be huge. Still, the Colombians can be proud of their national team for their great run to the finals.

Lionel Messi left the pitch crying

All eyes were on Lionel Messi’s performance in the final. One of the greatest players of all time was below his usual pace throughout the tournament due to a foot injury that kept him out for even one game. He was slowly getting back to his best with a great display against Canada in the semi-final and wanted to make the final his own.

It will not be an easy task for Argentina and Lionel Messi considering Colombia’s tendency to play rough and tough. For much of the final, Messi found it tough but the worst moment came in the 66ᵗʰ minute when the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was forced off the field with a horrific ankle injury. At this moment, Messi could not hold back his tears. The ending was sweet enough for Lionel Messi though as his team won the Copa America title.

Argentina continues to dominate world football

The great nation of Argentina has always been one of the top teams in the history of major international tournaments. The legacy of success in the latter half of the 20th century has given rise to great expectations and hopes from the present generation. Until 2021, Argentina’s fortunes did not please the fans as the players fell short in important hurdles.

However, the past three years have witnessed a stark reversal of fortune as the 2024 Copa America marks Argentina’s fourth title since 2021. The coach, Lionel Scaloni, has been able to implement a plan that flows through Lionel Messi but also optimizes the characteristics of those around him. No other football association has even come close to Argentina’s recent success which shows no signs of stopping.
