Manitoba police watchdog investigating medical incident after man arrested in Winnipeg – Winnipeg

The Manitoba Police watchdog is investigating the death of a man due to a medical incident following his arrest on Saturday.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says Winnipeg police reported an incident around 11:55 a.m.

The report says officers responded to a call for service in the Main Street and Alexander Avenue area regarding a man walking in traffic.

Police said officers handcuffed the man and an ambulance was requested as they believed the man was experiencing a medical emergency.

While in the ambulance, the man’s condition worsened and he was transported to the Health Sciences Center in critical condition.

On Monday, the IUI says it was notified by the Winnipeg Police Service that the man had died. The IUI has now taken responsibility for the investigation since the man was in police custody when the medical incident occurred.
