what do you know
Northwestern is 1-9 against the Hawkeyes since February 2018 but they will have a chance to close the gap a little on Saturday. The two teams will face off in a Big Ten battle at 5:30 PM ET at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Northwestern will look to keep its eight-game home winning streak alive.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats beat the Terrapins 68-61.
Northwestern can attribute much of its success to Nick Martinelli, who had 27 points and seven rebounds. In fact, this is the most points Martinelli has scored all season. Brooks Barnheiser was another key contributor, scoring 14 points and grabbing ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, oddsmakers have raised expectations, but Iowa and the Nittany Lions did not disappoint and went over 162.5 points over/under on Tuesday. The Hawkeyes beat the Nittany Lions, 90-81. It’s a little easier to win when your three-point shooting is 26.5% better than your opponent’s, as was the case at Iowa State.
Among those leading the charge was Payton Sandfort, who recorded a triple-double with 26 points, ten rebounds and ten a*sists. It was the first time this season that he recorded ten or more a*sists. The team also got some help thanks to Josh Dix, who scored 20 points.
The Wildcats have performed well recently as they have won five of their last six games, providing a nice boost to their 20-8 record this season. As for the Hawkeyes, their win raised their record to 17-12.
This is a contest where the number of possessions will likely be a big factor: Northwestern hasn’t given up the ball easily this season, averaging just 9 turnovers per game. However, it’s not as if Iowa State is struggling in this department as they average just 9.9 turnovers per game. Given these competing strengths, it will be interesting to see how their conflict will develop.
It all went Northwestern’s way against the Hawkeyes in their previous matchup in February 2023, as the Wildcats cruised to an 80-60 win. Will Northwestern repeat its success, or do the Hawkeyes have a better game plan this time? We’ll find out soon enough.
