Razzies apologize for naming 12-year-old ‘worst actress’: ‘Valid review’

The Razzies just blew themselves the biggest raspberry.

Razzie Awards founder John Wilson issued an apology on Wednesday after 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong was nominated for “Worst Actress” in the movie “Firestarter,” Variety reported.

Wilson also said the awards show will impose an age limit on who they seek to nominate in future years.

The film also stars “High School Musical” alum Zac Efron, who was not nominated for any awards.

“A young girl tries to figure out how she mysteriously gained the power to set things on fire with her mind,” reads the film’s description.

Armstrong was nominated alongside Bryce Dallas Howard for ‘Jurassic Park: Dominion’, Diane Keaton for ‘Mac and Rita’, Kaya Scodelario for ‘The King’s Daughter’ and Alicia Silverstone for ‘The Shark’.

“Sometimes you do things without thinking and then you get called out for it. So you get it. That’s why the Razzies were created in the first place,” Wilson said in the statement. Choosing 12-year-old Armstrong as a nominee for one of our awards has drawn our attention to our callousness in this case.”

The statement goes on to explain that Armstrong’s name will be removed from the final ballot when members vote next month, and the organization regrets any harm this may have caused him.

“Having learned from this lesson, we would also like to announce that effective immediately, we are adopting a voting guideline prohibiting any artist or filmmaker under the age of 18 from being considered for our awards,” the statement continued. “We never intended to bury anyone’s career. This is why our Redeemer Award was created. We all make mistakes, ourselves included.

“Since our motto is ‘Own Your Bad’, we realize that we ourselves must rise to the occasion,” the statement concludes.

“Firestarter” was also nominated for Worst Remake/Rip-off/Sequel.

The nomination also faced backlash from several online users.

“The Razzies are run by soulless people. Name a 12-year-old child? F–k them,” wrote former child star and “Chucky” actor Devon Sawa in a since-deleted tweet. “This kid could be amazing if you didn’t get inside his head.”

“The Razzies are already petty and classless, but naming a child is simply disgusting and wrong,” tweeted WandaVision star Julian Hilliard. “Why put a child at increased risk of bullying or worse? Be better.”

“Razzies nominating Ryan Kiera Armstrong for Worst Actress as if she’s the cause of FIRESTARTER being so bad is hysterical”, tweeted another furious user.

“That girl was the best part of this mess of a movie. And on top of that, no kid should ever be nominated for an award that hits them hard,” they added.
