Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the ill-fated Helen Shivers in the original film, recently teased her involvement in the upcoming sequel through an intriguing Instagram post.
She shared a snap of a director’s chair emblazoned with the series’ iconic logo, captioned with the playful remark: “Scooby Doo 3 coming soon.” While the post got us all on our feet, it fueled speculation about whether Gellar’s role would be on-screen or behind the scenes. Although it’s unclear whether she will return as Helen, her character who didn’t survive the first film, Sarah could still be part of the project. She hinted that she would be working behind the scenes to ensure the new film was authentic to the original.

Sarah Michelle Gellar hints at a return to “I know what you did last summer.” The franchise’s Freddie Prinze Jr. is officially returning as Ray Bronson, one of the key characters from the original film. Joining him is a new lineup of rising stars like Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King.
Longtime fans will also recognize Billy Campbell, who is also expected to return. With this blend of old and new, the film seems poised to introduce the story to a whole new audience while keeping loyal fans happy. The film is set to be released in July 2025 and director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is leading the charge. According to Gellar’s post, production is already underway.
