Sarah Michelle Gellar pays tribute to best friend Shannen Doherty of 30 years: ‘There was a lot of love’

Sarah Michelle Gellar is mourning the loss of her best friend Shannen Doherty.

The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress, 47, posted an emotional message on Instagram Monday, two days after Doherty died of breast cancer at age 53.

“How do you find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship?” Geller began her post, which included photos of the pair over the years.

“I keep reminding myself it only hurts so much because, well, there was so much love,” she continued. “Thank you, for all your kind words and support. I love all the messages about how important @theshando was to you. So let’s honor him.

“More than anything, Sean loved animals, especially dogs,” Geller said. In his memory let’s support our favorite animal charity. Whether it’s donating money, stopping by your local shelter and just offering a hug and a walk to the animals housed there, or even tagging them in the comments so other people know about their work. I know it will make our daughter happy (and Illicit’s deep-throated laugh we all loved).”

In the comment, Geller tagged the Lange Foundation, a nonprofit pet rescue and adoption service based in Los Angeles.

Doherty lost her battle with breast cancer on Saturday. She was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, enduring a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation. She went into remission in 2017, but shared in February 2020 that she was battling stage 4 breast cancer.

The “Heathers” actress developed a close bond with Geller while starring in the WB shows “Charmed” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” respectively, in the 1990s.

In 2020, Geller told PEOPLE that he talks to Doherty “every day”.

“She’s amazing,” Gellar said of the “Beverly Hills, 90210” alum.

That same year, the pair interviewed each other for Entertainment Tonight and opened up about their longtime friendship.

“It’s great for me to have a female friend who feels no threat, no jealousy. We never felt that with each other,” Doherty told Geller. “We’ve done nothing but lift each other up and support each other in our careers and champion each other.”

Doherty also revealed that Gellar was one of the first people to talk about her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis in 2020. She had an oncologist on hand when she shared the news with Geller and other close friends and family members.

“I knew that usually someone like you would have more questions and so I had to have my oncologist there so he could answer questions, clear up any doubts or comfort people, I think it was really to help you. ” Doherty said in the interview.

Geller said she’s not afraid to ask questions about Doherty’s cancer battle.

“You never know as a friend, as a family, what your place is, what you should be doing?” she said

Geller supported Doherty during the latter’s cancer battle. Last year, the “Cruel Intentions” star called Doherty a “warrior.”

“She’s incredible. She lives every day and she’s fighting,” Gellar told Access Hollywood. “There are ups and downs and some days are harder than others and some days are easier, but she’s doing great.”
