Second worker seriously injured in Nanticoke steel mill incident in April has died – Hamilton

Another subcontractor employee working at a steel mill in Nanticoke, Ont., died in late April following a workplace burn incident, according to the province.

The Department of Labor says the death is linked to an ongoing investigation into an event at the Stelco Inc. plant in Lake Erie in which two workers were burned while working with materials in a process steam cooling.

The two men, employed by metal wall and roofing manufacturer John Kenyon Limited, were flown to hospital on April 25 with life-threatening injuries.

The ministry says it was informed of the first death on May 16, just a few weeks after the episode.

Sheet Metal and Roofers Local 537 identified the man as Gabriel Cabral, 32, in a social media post and said he died while being treated in the Sunnybrook burn unit in Toronto.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by Cabral’s friends and colleagues, to help his immediate family, characterized him as “optimistic to the end” and pa*sionate about the outdoors.
