Sunwing Vacations Inc. says it is sending dozens of recovery flights this week to bring home thousands of passengers stranded in Mexico after winter storms disrupted operations.
“We continue to face unprecedented operational challenges, resulting in a number of ongoing flight delays,” airline president Len Corrado said in a statement.
“We deeply apologize for the impact on our customers’ travel plans over the holiday season.”

The airline said on Thursday it had 40 recovery flights scheduled this week, with 24 expected to be completed by the end of the day.
Sunwing said the delays, which began to pile up due to widespread flight cancellations due to winter storms, have been difficult to deal with due to displaced crews and planes.
While other airlines have also experienced disruptions and canceled flights, Sunwing’s focus on southern vacation destinations has meant a greater proportion of its travelers have been stranded overseas.
Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said in a statement on Wednesday that he was very concerned about the situation at Sunwing and that airlines must keep passengers informed.

“This current situation is unacceptable. Canadians must receive the information they need to return home safely.
Sunwing said it is communicating rescheduled flights as they are confirmed by flight alert notifications and ground representatives.
