Winnipeg embraces its latest summer adventure as Labor Day weekend marks the countdown to back to school – Winnipeg
Winnipeggers are rejoicing in their last summer celebrations as Labor Day weekend for many marks the countdown to back to school and has brought plenty of warmth and crowds to local city parks.
On Saturday afternoon, the temperature soared to 36 degrees and many flocked to the pools and shady parks to enjoy one last summer outing before the seasons change.
“Just to spend the day with the family, have a picnic, a barbecue. Since summer is almost over,” said Winnipegger Apolonio Villanueve.
“We saw the weather was good and thought we should come here to have fun and swim with the kids,” said Suleiman Abdullahi of Winnipeg.
And some Winnipeggers go out and enjoy fun family activities.
“This weekend, we are planning to go to Lake Winnipeg to fish with my family,” said Dalwei Jiang.
Although the heat was intense enough to warrant a warning from Environment Canada, many seemed happy to make the most of the sunny weather while it lasted.
“You know, you have to take advantage of the summer because it’s very short,” Abdullahi said.
Despite extreme weather in Manitoba this summer – from heat waves to smoke from wildfires – Winnipeggers took advantage of their vacation to travel and get outside.
“We had the best summer of our lives. Lots of camping with our grandkids, lots of different lakes, we had an absolutely joyful summer,” said Twyla Kenyon.
And many are keenly aware that colder temperatures are on the horizon and that Winnipeg’s winter will indeed arrive. “Hey, the snow is coming soon. We don’t want to complain about the heat, do we? she added.
Plus, the end of summer marks the start of school, and kids’ minds are definitely on the subject, and some are excited about the return.
“I am delighted that we finally have lockers. I’ve never had a record before,” said Alexis Dupré.
