A youth leader at a Calgary church has been accused of s****l a*sault, and the child victim says the abuse took place more than a decade ago inside the church and at a northern home -west.
“The accused cannot be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act as he was young at the time of the offences,” police said in a statement on Wednesday.
Police say the accused, who is now an adult, often works alone with children in a church.
In August, the victim came forward and said the abuse happened multiple times between 2011 and 2013.
The victim was a member of El Renacer Church and police believe the s****l a*saults occurred at a residence in Panorama Hills, a northwest community, and at the church.
The victim was seven years old at the time of the abuse and investigators believe the victim was pressured to perform unwanted s****l acts by the unnamed suspect.
The accused faces one count of s****l a*sault and one count of inciting s****l touching of a child under 16 years of age.
Anyone with information about this incident can contact Calgary police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
“It takes a lot of courage for victims of s****l a*sault to come forward to the police, especially in these circumstances,” says the detective. Tim Fitzgibbon of the Calgary Police Service’s Sexual Assault Investigation Unit.
“I want to thank the victim for speaking out.”
