Two youths face several charges of attempted murder against an RCMP officer near Truro early Sunday morning.

In a news release, police said the officer, who was heading home after finishing his shift, stopped and got out of his vehicle around 3:20 a.m. in North River when he saw a “ “suspicious school bus” parked on Highway 311.

“The officer noticed a dark-colored sedan parked in front of the school bus and a man standing outside the car talking to someone in the driver’s seat,” the release states. , adding that the sedan drove away after the man returned. inside the bus.

Police say the individual inside the bus fled on foot after the officer approached the vehicle and began asking questions.

“The officer pursued the man when he was intentionally struck by the dark-colored sedan,” police said.

“The man who fled on foot got into the dark-colored sedan, which turned around and attempted to hit the officer twice.”

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was seriously injured as several members of the RCMP and Truro Police Service began searching for the sedan.

Police said the officer has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

They say investigators discovered the bus was stolen from Sackville, New Brunswick, and the suspects had also broken into a nearby store before the attempted murder.

“During the burglary, the suspects stole energy drinks,” police said.

On Wednesday, police arrested a 15-year-old man at a train station in Miramichi, New Brunswick, located about 300 km from where the incident occurred on Sunday. The second suspect, a 17-year-old man, was arrested Thursday in Halifax.

The two young people face a total of eight charges, including attempted murder, a*sault with a weapon against a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime and fleeing the police.

Both suspects are currently in custody and will appear in Truro provincial court on Friday.
