Beatles scions James McCartney and Sean Ono Lennon take us from ‘Strawberry Fields’ to ‘Primrose Hill’ in new single: review

Here come the children.

62 years after the Beatles released their 1962 debut single “Love Me Do,” the first of many cla*sic songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, their descendants have come together to recreate the magic of tune-making.

“Primrose Hill”, the new single from James McCartney – Sir Paul’s only son with his late wife Linda – was co-written by Sean Lennon, John’s youngest son from his marriage to Yoko Ono.

And the next generation is proud of their parents with this melancholy beauty of a song that evokes some of the daydreams and nostalgia of “Now and Then” – which was released to great fanfare in November as the Beatles’ last single (and their first new tune since 1996).

Released on Friday, “Primrose Hill” — a public park north of London’s Regent’s Park — is the first-ever collaboration between McCartney, 46, and Lennon, 48.

And if there’s a song that can feel like a bittersweet walk in the park with nothing but your long memories, this song pretty much embodies it.

There’s something instantly familiar about it – the dreamy mood and McCartney’s delivery – but it never seems to fall into the Beatles tradition.

It also never reaches the heights of Beatles sublimity – I mean, how could it?

The lyrics almost border on love cliché at one point: “Forever isn’t long enough to love you / Forever and a day / I look into your eyes, it’s a great surprise / You take my breath away.”

But if you lose yourself in that warm and fuzzy feeling, you’ll get over it.

The bluesy guitar that comes at the end adds a nice touch to the bliss.

“Primrose Hill is here!” McCartney wrote in a post on Instagram, accompanying a photo of himself with Lennon. “Today I’m so excited to share my latest song co-written by my dear friend @sean_ono_lennon.”

McCartney — who, after releasing his last album “The Blackberry Train” in 2016, released another single called “Beautiful” earlier this year — also teased that more new music is on the way: “With the release of this song, I feel like we We are making progress and I am so excited to continue sharing our music with you.”
