Klay Thompson could join Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving after being shown the door at GSW 4x NBA Champions

If there’s one thing that was taken away from the Golden State Warriors in their playoff clash against the Sacramento Kings, it’s that Klay Thompson will never play in the Bay Area again. That was a tough pill to swallow especially since Thompson has been a big part of this franchise since 2011. He was instrumental in making the Warriors the best offensive team in the 2010s. And he also walked away with three NBA championships.

After the Warriors won their fourth title, things went downhill. They lost to the LA Lakers in the second round last season. And during this season’s play-ins they were shut out by the same team they beat in the first round last year. The Warriors really want Thompson back next year. However, they are aware that there is a business side to things that will dictate Thompson’s future at GSW.

Among the many potential suitors for Klay Thompson, the Orlando Magic have emerged as the frontrunners to sign him during 2024 free agency. One of the biggest surprises for the Magic this season was coming off the 13th seed from last season and finishing 5th in the Eastern Conference this season. Paolo Banchero has become a sensational star but this team still needs a veteran to run the whole show.

But Sam Amick is off athletic It was recently reported that NBA sources say that the Dallas Mavericks are the second team to watch. Dallas has also seen tremendous success over the years but they always seem one star away from winning despite having Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. They could add another shooter like Thompson that could open up the floor for Doncic to play.

Will Klay Thompson get the maximum extension?

This season, Klay Thompson is averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 a*sists per game on 43.2% shooting. However, he shot just 38.7% from the three-point arc in what was his second-worst season in terms of improvement. After going scoreless against the Kings in the play-in elimination game, the Warriors’ chances are slim. Go back to that, especially with maximum extension.

Midway through the season, Thompson turned down a two-year, $48 million contract offered by the Warriors. He’s looking for something more lucrative than $24 million a season. The Mavericks could go without a free agent next season committing to just over $171 million in salary. However, they have an expiring contract that belongs to Tim Hardaway Jr. that could be used to acquire Thompson.
