Taylor Swift says she ‘was an alcoholic’ in TTPD song ‘Fortnight’: ‘I was supposed to be sent away’

Taylor Swift’s “Tortured Poets Oath” is here — so let the lyrical meltdown begin.

For her long-awaited 11th studio album, Swift dropped 17 songs at midnight on Friday, then surprised fans with 15 additional tracks — making it a secret double album. And she wasted no time talking about her character on the first single, “Fortnight.”

“I was supposed to be sent away/But they forgot to come and get me,” she sings. “I was so addicted to alcohol that no one noticed my new beauty.”

She continues, “All my Monday mornings stuck in endless February / I took the miracle drug, and the effects were temporary.” “And I love you, it’s ruining my life / I love you, it’s ruining my life.”

It is unknown if Swift takes creative liberties in her songwriting with the lyrics.

The 34-year-old singer stopped drinking alcohol before embarking on her Eras Tour, which she started after her split from ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

“I knew this tour was harder than anything I’d ever done before,” Swift told Time magazine about her 2023 Person of the Year cover. She had previously trained “like a frat guy”, but this time she trained six months before the first show.

“I would run every day on the treadmill, singing the entire playlist out loud. Fasting for the fast songs, and jogging or walking fast for the slow songs,” she said. “Then I took dance training for three months, because I wanted to ingrain it in my bones. I wanted to rehearse more so I could be silly with the crowd and not lose my train of thought.

The only time she drank during her tour was at the 2023 Grammy Awards, where she was photographed dancing and singing to Demi Lovato’s tunes. She added: “I’m doing this show while I’m drunk. I don’t want to know this world.”

Here’s what to know about Taylor Swift’s new album, “The Tortured Poets Department”:

  • The 14-time Grammy Award winner released her long-awaited 11th studio album, “Tortured Poets Oath,” on Friday.
  • Swift sent her fans into a frenzy at 2am after revealing the record was a double album. Swift’s belated surprise hit, titled “The Anthology,” includes 15 additional songs, bringing the total to 31 songs.
  • Swift initially unveiled her 16-song album at midnight, including collaborations with Post Malone and Florence Welch on two tracks. There are also four bonus tracks, “The Manuscript”, “The Bolter”, “The Albatross” and “The Black Dog” that appear on the various vinyl editions of the album. The four tracks plus 11 new songs are included on “The Anthology”.
  • A poem about heartbreak that served as an introduction to the album was written by Fleetwood Mac alum Stevie Nicks.
  • There are many celebrity names sprinkled throughout the album’s lyrics, and the mention of singer Charlie Puth surprised some Swifties.
  • While some of Swift’s exes haven’t spared “TTPD,” the 34-year-old singer appears to reference her current beau Travis Kelce in the new album’s song “The Alchemy” in an endearing way.
  • As for her exes, The 1975 singer Matty Healy is said to be referenced on the powerful 31-song record. In fact, Hailey – who, prior to their summer split, had a rekindled romance with the pop star following her split from British actor Joe Alwyn after six years – appears to be the subject of a vicious “youngest man who ever lived” takedown. However, other fans may speculate that the phrase “sparkling summer” is about Alwyn. There are also hints that “I Can Fix It (I Really Can’t)” — gotta love that title — might be about the 35-year-old Hailey.
  • As for Alwyn, Swift dropped hints at their ill-fated 6-year romance for a good — or, for him, not so good — portion of the album. Check out the 10 Alwyn-related references we spotted.

“I’ve been a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experience and those melodies he creates that stick in your head forever,” she wrote on Instagram this week. “I saw this magic come to life firsthand as we worked together in two weeks.”
